The recycling of waste photovoltaic panels has consistently been disregarded, despite the fact that there are multiple initiatives made throughout the world to manage and recycle other electronic devices that have reached the end of their useful lifespans (Islam et al. 2018; Dias et al. 2018a, b).
The four key recommendations to tackle challenges in photovoltaic (PV) recycling are as follows: promote design for recycling (DfR); data availability; advance policy; and incentivize upcycling. DfR concepts need to be incorporated in the design phase and can be explored through innovations in the frame, material choices and module lamination 111.
By the end of 2023, the global installed PV capacity had reached approximately 700 GW, projected to surge to 4500 GW by 2050.
